Chapter 26

Chapter 26: Dharani

Dhāraṇī

Translated by H. Kern

The Bodhisattva Medicine King rises before the Buddha and declares that he will offer a dharani -- a protective incantation or formula of power -- for the benefit of any teacher of the Law who preaches the Lotus Sutra. He speaks the dharani aloud, and declares that anyone who assails or troubles a preacher of the Lotus Sutra will have assailed these Buddhas directly. The Bodhisattva Brave Donor then offers his own dharani, equally powerful in its protective capacity. These dharanis are understood not as mere magical formulas but as concentrated expressions of spiritual power that safeguard the practitioner and the Dharma itself.

The heavenly king Vaishravana, guardian of the north, offers a dharani for the protection of Lotus Sutra preachers, and the heavenly king Holder of the Nation does the same. Ten demon daughters -- rakshasas together with their mother and attendants -- also come forward and vow to protect those who uphold the sutra. They declare that anyone who fails to heed their dharani and troubles a preacher of the sutra will have their head split into seven pieces. They pledge to guard the practitioners more carefully than they would protect their own eyes.

The Buddha praises all those who have offered dharanis, saying that they will gain incalculable merit. This chapter reflects the integration of esoteric and devotional elements into the Lotus Sutra's framework. The dharanis serve as tangible assurances that the practitioner does not walk the path alone but is surrounded and protected by the most powerful spiritual beings in the cosmos. The chapter reinforces the sutra's promise that those who undertake the difficult work of propagation will receive support commensurate with the magnitude of their mission.
