Chapter 6

Chapter 6: Bestowal of Prophecy

Vyākaraṇa

Translated by H. Kern

Having praised the parable of the prodigal son and confirmed the disciples' newfound understanding, the Buddha proceeds to formally bestow prophecies of future Buddhahood upon the four great voice-hearers. Mahakashyapa is told that after serving and making offerings to three hundred trillion Buddhas in future ages, he will become a Buddha named Light Brightness Tathagata, presiding over a pure and magnificent world called Light Virtue.

Subhuti will become a Buddha named Name Phase Tathagata, Katyayana will become the Buddha Jambu River Gold Light Tathagata, and Maudgalyayana will become the Buddha Tamalapattra Sandalwood Fragrance Tathagata. Each prophecy specifies the name of the future Buddha, the name and characteristics of his world, the duration of his Dharma, and the number of beings he will lead to enlightenment. These detailed prophecies are not mere predictions but solemn assurances that carry the full authority of the Buddha's word.

The bestowal of these prophecies upon voice-hearers who had previously been considered incapable of attaining supreme Buddhahood represents a dramatic turning point. It demonstrates in the most concrete terms that the One Vehicle teaching is not merely theoretical but applies personally to each of the Buddha's foremost disciples. The joy of the four recipients and the assembly confirms that the promise of universal Buddhahood is being received and believed.
