Chapter 1

Chapter 1: Introduction

Nidāna

Translated by H. Kern

The Lotus Sutra opens on Vulture Peak near the city of Rajagriha, where the Buddha is seated before a vast assembly of monks, nuns, bodhisattvas, heavenly beings, and countless other sentient beings. The Buddha has just finished preaching the Sutra of Innumerable Meanings and enters a deep state of meditation known as the "samadhi of the place of immeasurable meanings." Flowers rain from the sky and the earth trembles in six different ways, filling the assembly with wonder and anticipation.

From the tuft of white hair between his eyebrows, the Buddha emits a single beam of light that illuminates eighteen thousand worlds to the east. In these worlds the assembly witnesses the full range of existence -- beings in the six paths of rebirth, Buddhas preaching the Dharma, bodhisattvas practicing the way, and the relics of Buddhas who have passed into nirvana. The entire panorama of cosmic reality is made visible in an instant.

The Bodhisattva Maitreya, astonished by these signs, asks the Bodhisattva Manjushri to explain their cause. Manjushri replies by recounting a story from the immeasurable past, when a Buddha called Sun Moon Bright displayed the same portents before preaching the Lotus Sutra. This parallel establishes that the present signs herald the same supreme teaching and sets the stage for the Buddha's epochal discourse that will unfold over the remaining twenty-seven chapters.
